The CHL Scholarship Package

Every CHL player earns a post-secondary scholarship through the league: tuition, fees, and books, banked one year for every season played.

Every player on a CHL roster earns a tuition scholarship for each season they play. The package is a core part of the CHL's value proposition to players and families: even players who never make pro hockey leave with funded education.

What the package covers

  • Tuition, compulsory fees, and required books for an academic year at a Canadian or U.S. post-secondary institution.
  • One year of scholarship per CHL season played, with each year earned banked for later use.
  • Use must begin within a defined window after a player's major junior career ends (typically 18 months) and continue with steady progress toward a degree.

How it is funded

Each team funds and administers its own scholarship pool. The CHL sets minimum standards; teams can offer additional benefits as part of recruitment. Players who are drafted or signed by an NHL team and play professional hockey usually forfeit their CHL scholarship rights once they sign a pro contract, though specifics vary by player and year.

What this looks like in practice

A four-year CHL player who heads to USports, a Canadian university, or now an NCAA program can have four years of tuition covered. Combined with the new NCAA eligibility rules, the scholarship has become a more flexible asset than it was in past decades.
